Nephrite comes from the Greek word for kidney ‘nephros’, and was applied to this form of Jade due to its kidney-shaped pebbles and boulders - the reason for belief that this stone can cure kidney ailments and diseases.
Jadeite is the more expensive of the two forms of Jade with a hardness of 6.5 to 7, and is found in South America and Burma. The New Zealand green stone 'pounamu' is also a form of Nephrite Jade.

The energy of Jade (Nephrite & Jadeite) is such a wonderous thing and therefore, I would like to provide a little additional information (via geologypage.com) because far too many wrongly call Serpentine/Xiuyan (New Jade), Australian Jade, Malaysian Jade and Mountain Jade as 'Jade'. Such beautiful stones in their own right, their energy and healing properties are different to Nephrite and Jadeite.
While Nephrite Jade possesses mainly grays and greens (and occasionally yellows, browns or whites), the much rarer Jadeite Jade, can also contain blacks, reds, pinks and violets. Nephrite Jade is an ornamental stone used in carvings, beads, or cabochon cut gemstones.
'Nephrite can be found in a translucent white to very light yellow form which is known in China as mutton fat jade, in an opaque white to very light brown or gray, which is known as chicken bone jade, as well as in a variety of green colors. Western Canada is the principal source of modern lapidary nephrite. Nephrite jade was used mostly in pre-1800 China as well as in New Zealand, the Pacific Coast and Atlantic Coasts of North America, Neolithic Europe, and southeast Asia.'
